Who here has purchased one or many of these rubber door mats only to have the colors fade away? You know what I’m talking about. They look so pretty and colorful in the store, but after a few months, not so good. I have thrown away quite a few door mats in my day when all I had to do was repaint them. Who knew?
I’m here to show you how I repainted my door mats and brought them back to life!
Here is the obvious before picture (LOL!) This is the mat that greets my visitors at the front door. Not so welcoming is it?
I decided to use a combination of chalk paint and acrylics because that’s what I had on hand. The brush I used was a chip brush that I cut down to make it more stiff, but any stiff bristle brush will work.
After cleaning my mat, I started with black paint to freshen the lines of the mat. (UPDATE: I used flat black spray paint to do this step for the next mat that I did. Worked way better and faster!)
I had quite the array of paint colors out. I wasn’t sure the direction I wanted to go until I started painting. So, you don’t really need a plan, just do what you like! I found that I liked the chalk paint better. It has a thicker consistency and better coverage.
Here is my finished masterpiece. Now, don’t you think this is better to greet guests with? And I saved money, too!
After you are done making your old mat pretty again, you will definitely want to seal it. I used Krylon Clear Polyurethane Interior/Exterior sealer.
Here is the other mat that I did that I have at my backdoor. This is the one where I used the black spray paint. I had a little help from my daughter and son-in-law picking out the color design. I think it turned out amazing, too! I did a Facebook Live demonstrating on how I painted this one. You can find the link here at the bottom of this post. (Unfortunately, my sound was not working properly, but the video is fine.)
I hope this inspires you to transform your own rubber door mats!
