Oh my gourd! There are so many beautiful faux pumpkins out there! But, they are sooo expensive! This year has been pumpkin overload around The Windswept Cowboy homestead and I didn’t pay those high prices. Wanna know my secret? Several of my faux pumpkins I decoupaged and saved a ton of money. I just used those orange pumpkins and faux napkins and/or fall leaves from the Dollar Tree, some spray paint (optional), and of course, Mod Podge. Here’s how I made them:
Here are the things you will need: Download the list here
First, you will want to split your napkins sheets so you just have the top ply with the design.
I cut my napkin into 4 quadrants just so they were easier to handle.
Then I starting tearing out my leaves. I thought the jagged edges looked better, but it’s whatever you like.
I used my brush to add some Mod Podge directly to the pumpkin first. That way the napkin or leaves will stick. Then I brushed more Mod Podge over the napkin/leaves. Don’t worry about it looking white because it will dry clear.
In all my excitement, I forgot to take a picture of the finished pumpkin before it went to it’s home. I did create a slightly different version that you can see here.
This time I covered the whole foam pumpkin with decoupage and then spray painted it before I added my leaves. (You don’t want to spray directly on the foam because the spray paint will eat through the foam.) I, then, just decoupaged the fall leaves onto the pumpkin just like I did with the napkin. I took a little twine and wrapped around the stem.
If you would like to watch me do a live demo on how I use the decoupage you can click the link here. (The video starts at about 1 minute 20 seconds in.)
I hope this inspires you to try your hand at DIYing your own pumpkins!
